大学历史背景
作为Adelaide大学的前任Bedford校区，Flinders大学是由伊丽莎白女皇于1966年3月25日正式宣布作为独立的大学的。其实就在宣布的前18天，南澳议会通过了相关将Flinders做为独立学院及州第二大综合性大学的法案，并于同年的7月1日正式实行该法案。大学是以英国著名的航海家Matthew Flinders（1802年 探寻并考察南澳海岸）命名的。
成立后，该大学最有建设性的创举之一就是以一所毗邻大学、新成立的政府医院作为大学的医学院，并成立Flinders Medical Centre（FMC）。此举在当时的澳洲乃首创。FMC与1976年正式启用，直到1990 年，该大学才先后建起了另外3座学院大楼（法律与商贸、工程、信息科技），幷于1991年合并了南澳的高等教育学院，将4学院的结构由1992年起沿用至今。
学术实力
成立至今，Flinders目前可提供过百门学士与硕士课程，以及各个领域高层次的研究课题，涵盖领域包括商学类、经济类、计算器类、语言文化类、医学类等等。除传统学科外，近年来该大学还在一系列新的研究课程开设了研究生课程，如生物技术、法庭学等。
在2004年由墨尔本大学主办的澳洲研究型院校评审中，该大学别列入全澳8所研究型大学范围，国际期刊中最常引述的便是Flinders,而且该校的志愿还曾获得澳洲大学校长委员会AVCC设立的教学优秀奖，同时属于澳洲6所创新研究大学联盟IRU-Australia的成员之一，培养出多名知名研究生，包括日本的第一位航天员、政界商界的领导人，澳洲电影奖获奖导演等。

校园环境&设施
该校坐落在阿德莱德市洛夫提山脚下，环境十分优雅距离市中心仅10公里的路程。学校共有四座图书馆，提供宽敞的阅读和学习场所。同时，还为所有学生提供微型胶片、视听数据、微型计算机及各方面的光盘数据库等资源设施。学生可免费通过专用终端接国际互用联网使用借阅设施和收发电子邮件。校学生会为大家提供各种服务，学校还提供各种各样的生活娱乐设施，设备齐全的健身房及许多一流的运动场地。此外，学校还提供其他的学生服务设施包括：保健、咨询、金融、教育、福利、幼儿园、语言和学习技巧辅导、可提供各国食品的餐馆、60多个学生协会、俱乐部和一个大学体育馆。
